Revenge of the Rhythm Section with Bassist Jim Cox & Drummer Jack Mouse
"The Revenge of the Rhythm Section" featuring North Central College Jazz Faculty members Jack Mouse on drums and Jim Cox on bass will be presented at 8 p.m. Friday, April 10, in Madden Theatre at the Fine Arts Center, 171 E. Chicago Ave. Tickets are $20/adults, $15/students and senior citizens. Bassist Jim Cox grew up in Champaign, Illinois, where he began playing cornet, electric bass and double bass. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Music Performance on double bass from the University of Illinois in Urbana. Soon after, he toured for three years with Earl "Fatha" Hines. Between tours with Earl he settled into Chicago, where he has since worked as a full-time musician. Jim has worked with numerous notable artists, including Randy Brecker, Red Rodney, Eliane Elias, Sheila Jordan, Buddy DeFranco, Rosemary Clooney, Helen Forrest and Michael Feinstein. For 15 years He worked regularly with famed pianist Marian McPartland. He also works with the Maxwell Street Klezmer Band. Jim's extensive discography of more than 100 CD releases includes projects as diverse in style as jazz, bluegrass, klezmer, folk, cabaret and pop. He has taught at DePaul University, Benedictine University, Barat College and College of DuPage, and has served on the faculties of Birch Creek Music Camp, Saskatchewan Summer School of the Arts and Illinois Summer Youth Music. Drummer Jack Mouse's extensive background began when, upon graduating from college, he spent three years as featured soloist with the "Falconaires", the official jazz ensemble of the U.S. Air Force Academy. He has since performed with such outstanding jazz artists as Stan Kenton, Clark Terry, Herb Ellis, Joe Williams, Carl Fontana, Randy Brecker and many more. Jack's current CD "Range of Motion" (Origin Records), featuring his original compositions, has received extensive international radio airplay and glowing reviews. A member of the Janice Borla Group since 1985, he can be heard on Borla's CDs, including her latest release "Promises to Burn", named one of DownBeat Magazine's "Best CDs of 2014." He has authored articles for Percussive Notes and the IAJE-Illinois Newsletter. Currently Coordinator of Jazz Studies at North Central College, Jack has also served on the faculties of many well-known summer jazz camps. As a member of the Bunky Green Quartet, he was among the first musicians to introduce jazz education to the Montreux Switzerland Jazz Festival. He has been a faculty artist member of the Janice Borla Vocal Jazz Camp since its founding in 1989. He has presented clinics and workshops at jazz festivals, music conventions, colleges and high schools throughout the world and authored articles for Percussive Notes and the IAJE-Illinois Newsletter. In 2012 Jack received an Aquarian Award of Achievement, presented by Aquarian Drum Heads in acknowledgement of his contributions as a performer and jazz educator. Presently Jack is a staff artist/clinician for Yamaha Drums, Sabian Cymbals, Aquarian Drum Heads and Vic Firth Drum Sticks.
