Contraband History: Podcasting a People'a Civil War
Rutgers University Professor and critical communication scholar Chenjerai Kumanyika talks about his new podcast on People's Civil War. Bio for Chenjerai Kumanyika Dr. Chenjerai Kumanyika is a researcher, journalist, and artist who works as an assistant professor in Rutgers University's Department of Journalism and Media Studies. His research and teaching focus on the intersections of social justice and emerging media in the cultural and creative industries. He has written about these issues in journals such as Popular Music & Society, Popular Communication, The Routledge Companion to Advertising and Promotional Culture and Technology, Pedagogy and Education. Currently Dr. Kumanyika is the Co-Executive Producer and Co-Host of Gimlet Media's new podcast on the Civil War. Dr. Kumanyika has also been a contributor to Transom, NPR Codeswitch, All Things Considered, Invisibilia, VICE, and he is a news analyst for Rising Up Radio with Sonali Kolhatkar His January 2015 article on Vocal Color in Public Radio produced for spawned a nationwide discussion of diversity and voices in public media. Starting in the fall of 2014, Dr. Kumanyika pulled in international audiences with his livestream coverage of protests in a number of cities including Ferguson, New York, Ohio, Philadelphia, and South Carolina.
